I am Maria Orms. I am a mother, a military veteran, an environmentalist, and an engineer. I’m running to represent the people of Senate District 31 in Denver and Arapahoe counties because I believe in people over profits. I want to change the world; our future, one person and one family at a time, for a better Colorado. After all, you deserve someone who will fight for you.
Like you, my friends and neighbors, I’ve had life experiences that have shaped who I am and how I see the world. I was born in a small town in Texas, to a social worker father, who worked for the Bureau of Indian Affairs and a hard-working, loving mother who was a nurse. When I was five, we moved to the Standing Rock Reservation in North Dakota for my father’s job.
This moment, instilled in me the life-changing experiences that guide my principles and values of freedom, opportunity, responsibility, and security. These are principles I live by, and that I have taught my two daughters, who now serve our nation, protecting our Colorado values in the armed services.
I was a soldier myself in Germany, in 1989 when the Berlin Wall fell. I saw how belief, freedom, and opportunity could change not just a community or city but a nation. More importantly, at that moment, in 1989 I learned how freedom and opportunity came with a responsibility to create security for all Americans. That’s what soldiers do, that’s what governments are supposed to do.
Friends and neighbors, I’m running for State Senator because I was taught at a young age; we all do our part, and you leave the world a better place for the next generation. I have lived every day with those principles in mind, whether fighting the legislators who’ve supported fracking, fighting for higher teacher pay, more funding for our schools and now more affordable housing for our Colorado families. As a progressive, I believe the government should work for the people and be held accountable to us. Somewhere in the last 50 years, that got lost. I’m going to change that.
I am Maria Orms, a mom, a military veteran, an environmentalist, and an engineer and I’m fighting for our Colorado families. I’m asking for your support and your vote so that we can make a better Colorado because you deserve someone who will fight for you!
